SkyBus to replace existing service connecting Avalon Airport to Melbourne’s CBD

Announcement brings more good news for Avalon Airport as Victoria’s second airport continues to grow.

Melbourne, Australia – SkyBus, operators of Melbourne’s express CBD to Tullamarine Airport service, today announced that it will commence the SkyBus Avalon Express which will meet all departing and arriving flights at Avalon Airport to transport passengers to and from Melbourne’s CBD on an express service from February 1 2017.

The SkyBus Avalon Express service will allow passengers to use the new Airport Gateway facilities at Southern Cross Station on their Avalon journey, as well as the much-loved SkyBus perks including Free Wi-Fi, easy ticketing options, and most importantly, a regular and reliable service.

Launching the new SkyBus Avalon Express service, Director of SkyBus, Michael Sewards said, “SkyBus is delighted to bring our first-class service to Avalon Airport and connect Victoria’s second airport with Melbourne.”

“Victoria is becoming more and more popular as a tourist destination for Australians and international visitors, so it’s beyond doubt that Avalon Airport, as Victoria’s second airport, is also going to continue to grow,” Mr Sewards said.

SkyBus’ announcement delivers further good news for Avalon Airport, following the Victorian Government’s announcement last year that it had guaranteed the future of Victoria’s second airport by signing an agreement with Jetstar that expands Avalon’s passenger services1.

The number of passengers using Avalon Airport has grown by 65,000 in the past year, with Jetstar launching new routes to Gold Coast, Hobart and Adelaide2. By 2030/31, the number of domestic and international passengers using Avalon Airport is expected to grow to 9.4 million3.

“Thanks to SkyBus, tourists using Avalon Airport can now reach Melbourne’s CBD quickly, easily and cost-effectively, along with a pick up and drop off at Werribee allowing Werribee residents to be better connected,” Mr Sewards added.

Supporting SkyBus’ announcement, Member for Lara and Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren said, “We’ve already secured the future of Avalon Airport, and now we’re witnessing it grow stronger than ever and reach its true potential. SkyBus’ new direct connection between Avalon Airport and Melbourne ensures that Victoria’s second airport has a bright future – and that means jobs for locals.”

The SkyBus Avalon Express service will arrive and depart from the new ‘Airport Gateway’, a $1.5 million state-of-the-art facility at Southern Cross Station built by SkyBus to improve the experience of Victorians and tourists travelling to the airport.

Justin Giddings, CEO of Avalon Airport said, “Avalon Airport is a growing and successful airport. Over the past year we’ve launched four new routes with Jetstar, meaning that Avalon is directly linked to a population of more than 6.5 million travellers. With the addition of the SkyBus Avalon Express, travel between Avalon Airport and Melbourne has become much easier.”

By 2030/31, Avalon Airport’s total market share as a percentage of passenger traffic through the Melbourne gateway is expected to increase from current levels of around 4% to approximately 12%3.

Adam Begg, Director of SkyBus said, “As Avalon Airport’s passenger numbers continue to grow, the SkyBus Avalon Express service offers the potential to relieve congestion on the Western Freeway through the scale factors of mass transit, providing the environmental benefit of less cars on the road.”

Jetstar’s Head of Products and Ancillary Revenue, Nigel Fanning, said quality and affordable airport transport is an important part of the airline's vision to make travel more accessible.

“Jetstar is proud to have a strong partnership with SkyBus and offer our customers discounted SkyBus tickets via our website,” Mr Fanning said. "The new express SkyBus service between Avalon and Melbourne CBD will no doubt create even further appeal for passengers to fly in and out of Avalon Airport."

Adult one-way fares between Avalon Airport and Melbourne’s CBD will be from $22, with return trips costing $42. Families can take advantage of SkyBus’ discounted fares – as on all SkyBus services, children 16 and under travel free when they are booked with an adult fare. Tickets can be purchased online, via smartphone or at dedicated e-kiosks at Avalon Airport or Southern Cross Station’s Airport Gateway. Jetstar customers will also be offered the opportunity to purchase their SkyBus Avalon Express ticket in their Jetstar ticket process. As usual, SkyBus will also be offering its Free Hotel Shuttle service from Melbourne’s CBD to all customers.
