What to do on a rainy day in Melbourne
Let’s face it – Melbourne’s weather can be a touch unpredictable. Winter in Melbourne can mean opening the umbrella one minute and stripping off your jacket the next as the sun bursts through the clouds. You’ll get used to this constant transitioning.
When the weather does take a turn for the worst however, it doesn't mean there’s a shortage of things to do. We’ve put together a list of rainy day activities to keep you occupied when the heaven’s open.
There’s nothing like curling up with a good book indoors while rain lashes the windows. Visit the Booktalk Cafe in Richmond and browse the new and second hand books whilst grabbing a bite to eat. Or in the CBD, pop into Mr Tulk next to the State Library where you can sample their delicious flatbreads and sweet selection, rugged up with a good read. In Flinders Lane there’s the Journal Cafe attached to the City Library. Their name is pretty self explanatory.
If it’s clouded over and looking nasty, hunker down at the Red Triangle Snooker Room, open everyday of the year midday until 2am. While away the hours playing pool or board games with mates and although it my be freezing outside, its recommended you try one of their famous milkshakes. Indulge in flavours like snickers, hot jam donut and tiramisu.
Escape the winter chill at the traditional Onsen Ma Japanese Bathhouse in the heart of Melbourne. Settle into the welcoming and relaxing baths and your troubles will soon float away. You’ll soon forget that its cold outside. Shiatsu massages are also available.
Note: It’s the Japanese way for patrons to bathe together, gender segregated of course.
The perfect winter warmer is the humble hot chocolate; satisfy the sweet cravings and warm up from the inside out. At Melbourne Central, try one of 6 flavoured hot chocolates at Max Brenner in their famous Hug Mug (your hands will warm up in no time) or visit Koko Black for a seriously rich brew with a piece of chocolate sticking out the top. In North Melbourne, stop by Mörk Chocolate Brew House and experience more than just a hot chocolate. Only a year old but making its mark in Melbourne, Mörk takes everything chocolate to the next level.
