For 63 years and counting, Melbourne has celebrated it’s famous Moomba Festival over the Labour Day long weekend. Moomba brings families and the wider community together in feel good fashion, culminating in a festival full of rides, entertainment, food stalls, water sports and finally the Moomba Parade down St Kilda Road.
With the Yarra River winding its way through the festival, water sports are a key part of the weekend. Water-skiing, wake boarding and water acrobatic activities will be wowing crowds with their speed and precision, with the winners being crowned the Moomba Masters title. There’s also plenty of action down at the Riverslide Skate Park, with BMX, scoot and skate competitions and free clinics to help you skate like a pro.
Highlights of the Festival are the Moomba Parade and the Birdman Rally. Creativity and diversity are at the heart of the Parade; it includes floats designed by community groups, as well as entertainers, dancers and cultural performances. And the same can be said for the Birdman Rally – a competition whereby punters build their idea of a flying device and launch themselves into the Yarra River, aiming to make the furthest distance. You’ll see giant birds, winged contraptions or attempted aeroplanes throwing themselves as far as possible and flying (or falling) into the river. It’s quite a spectacle!
It wouldn’t be a festival in Melbourne without 30 or more food trucks and stalls serving everything from fried chicken to burgers, Sri Lankan street food to American style carnival food. There’s also rides, attractions and activities spread out over the lawn. Why not grab some lunch and sprawl on the grass overlooking the river, watching the water-skiers go by.
Get down to the iconic Moomba Festival this long weekend and enjoy the fun and friendly atmosphere, celebrating weird and wacky Melbourne.
