Sacred Heart Mission

In 1982, Parish Priest Father Ernie Smith opened his door and shared a meal with a man who was hungry and experiencing homelessness. Today, Scared Heart Mission serves over 128,000 meals a year.
Recently, a handful of SkyBus team members had the privilege to volunteer in the dining hall to prepare and serve meals to the homeless. The aim of the meals program is to provide people with a nutritious meal, every day of the year.
Commenting on her experience Natalie Rodriguez, SkyBus team member said “We were fortunate enough to be part of a wonderful organisation which feeds those less fortunate than us”.
The Dining Hall is the heart of the Mission, where hundreds of people who are experiencing homelessness, social disadvantage or isolation come to share a meal and engage with the services.
The Meals Program provides hearty, nutritious meals 365 days of the year. It is a program that does far more than feed people. It also provides opportunities for people to reconnect to and develop a sense of community and belonging.
It takes a professional kitchen staff of four and a team of more than 20 volunteers to prepare breakfast and lunch each day – every single day of the year, including public holidays.
“It was a very humbling experience and lovely to spend time and have a chat with the clients who were very grateful for the meals provided to them. Definitely something we have all agreed to do again on a regular basis. It is definitely a wonderful experience and recommended to all!”
With limited funds per year, Sacred Heart Mission’s work is supplemented by generous food donations from farmers, catering companies, local bakeries, cafes and restaurants, and food rescue agencies.
