For years Cirque du Soleil has taken the average circus and turned it into a theatrical masterpiece since its inception in 1984. This November, they bring their 37th production to stage at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, in TORUK – The First Flight.
Based on James Cameron’s acclaimed movie AVATAR, TORUK is set in the magical world of Pandora thousands of years before humans came to the planet as is depicted in the film.
The story, portraying a natural disaster that is threatening to destroy the sacred Tree of Souls is narrated by a Na’vi storyteller recounting the efforts of two boys from the Omatikaya Clan, who take it upon themselves to try and save the sacred tree. The two boys venture into the floating mountains to seek out Toruk, the mystical dragon-like predator both feared and honoured by the Na’vi, in the hope that Toruk may be the key to save the Sacred tree of Souls.
Cirque du Soleil is renowned for its highly imaginative and immersive sets, with spectacular visuals, mind-blowing puppetry and stagecraft accompanied by a truly captivating score. With the help of James Cameron, Cirque du Soleil has bought to life the magical world of Pandora to stage with an added flair that is uniquely there’s.
Cirque du Soleil has bewitched audiences over six continents, 300 cities and to more than 155 million spectators over the last 33 years.
