To celebrate the 10 Year Anniversary of Open House Melbourne, the once a year all-access weekend has grown into a month long urban design and architecture festival. 84 new building have been added to the lineup, totalling over 200, and spreading to the far reaches of greater Melbourne.
So what is Open House Melbourne exactly? A chance to explore some of the city’s most famous buildings, houses and dwellings both public and private. With their doors thrown open to the public, the listed buildings become a thoroughfare for the public to wander through and discover great design, interiors and architecture. Like always, a mix of old and new, modern and old-fashioned buildings and spaces are on offer for the public to enjoy.
Leading up to the Open House Weekend is a number of activities relating to architecture and urban design. A number of talks and film screenings build up to the weekend itself. There are also special walking tours and events on offer over the Open House Weekend such as the City Sculpture Tour, focussing on Melbourne’s ample sculpture and art and Shaping Flinders Lane, a tour looking at the design and architecture in one of Melbourne’s most popular restaurant lined streets.
During the Open House Weekend, it’s hard to miss the booths and stalls dotted all around the CBD. Here you can pick up a program and ask staff directions for making your own tour. Or check out their website here where you can look up buildings and plan your day out. Certain buildings have pre-booked tours alone so it’s best to do your research.
Open House Melbourne is always regarded as an event not to be missed, but this year will be something special. Get out and about at Open House Melbourne and explore our amazing city!
