Royal Exhibition Centre

The Royal Exhibition Building is one of the world’s oldest remaining exhibition pavilions. On 1 July 2004, it became the first building in Australia to achieve a World Heritage listing. Located in Carlton Gardens, the pavilion was originally completed in 1880 for the first of two international fairs hosted by Melbourne. On May 1st, 1901, the initial Commonwealth Parliament was held here, an event commemorated in 2001, the centenary of Australian Federation.

Old Treasury Building

Sitting at the top of Collins Street in the Melbourne CBD is the Old Treasury Building, widely regarded as one of the finest 19th Century buildings in Australia.

State Library of Victoria

A Melbourne city landmark and cultural icon, the Library is a magnificent 19th-century building with some of the city’s most beautiful heritage interiors. The La Trobe Reading Room, with its majestic domed ceiling, is a highlight. Don’t miss the two free permanent exhibitions: see Ned Kelly’s armour in the changing face of Victoria, and trace the history of books in Mirror of the World. Free guided tours available.
